We got separated and I was told that I was being an asshole. Can’t win them all but, I’m sure as fuck not going to sit and listen to someone talk shit 10 feet away without saying something. They swung, I got hit, and I got pushed outside.

I worked on the ‘wang’ section, I still remember the orders for Tilburg, Essen.

We would cut over the head and around the ears and mount the ears to our hard hat or the snout to the front of the hard hat.

We had two lines, one line has a bunch of Belgiums (9) n one wall and that line ran faster than the Dutch/German side, but one morning they didn’t turn in, Jurgen our line manager was panicking and wanted to know where they were, seems they were all still in jail because one of them forgot to put their cannabis in the locker and the van was pulled over by the Belgium police at the border and took them all in.

We had some fun times.

The line manager was a German called Jurgen Wolfe, if he pissed me off I’d call him Dutch, if I pissed him off, he’d call me Scottish. Lol. It was all in fun and he was a great bloke. I miss that guy.

We got a new Dutch guy called Wouter and was heavily autistic. They put him on the cheek section and said to me, if he stares into the distance or at the lights, wave your hand in front of him, I said, ‘you want me to shock an guy out of a daze while he’s holding a very sharp eight inch blade knife? No way, get him out of here’. They gave him a broom and he would walk around sweep ing, pushing his brush into peoples feet while they were cutting flesh off ribs, etc... it was funny but also very scary.

I was originally a packer

But our line would dwindle from six/ seven to two quite often, just me and Hungarian, Laslo.

I would often end up a knifeman, checker (for abscesses) , sorter and packer.

Jurgen would worry about me sometimes and get three or four people to give me a hand while I took a two minute break, after two minutes while I caught my breath I’d send them away, correct what they’d done and keep going.

I was always getting looks for packing too well, I could get 1,100Kg of meat into a bakken that’s supposed to only hold 800Kg, so they’d have to come back and empty some into the next order . I remember one slow day we got an order for 32 bakken, I was throwing meat under-arm, over-head, etc...
